Víctor Bretón Solo de Zaldívar

He's Ph. Dr. in Social Anthropology by the University of Barcelona, professor of the University of Lleida, member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Studies of Development and Multiculturality (GIEDEM) and Associated Researcher of FLACSO-Ecuador. Author of "Tierra, Estado y Capitalismo" (2000); "Cooperación al desarrollo y demandas étnicas en los Andes ecuatorianos" (2001); "Capital social y etnodesarrollo en los Andes" (2005) and co-publisher of "Los límites del desarrollo" (1999) and "Estado, etnicidad y movimientos sociales América Latina" (2003) (breton@hahs.udl.es).

Carlos de la Torre

He's the director of the Doctorate in Social Sciences of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), Ecuador. Before incorporating into this institution, he was professor of Sociology at the Drew University (Madison) and at Northeastern University (Boston). He obtained a Ph. D. in Sociology in the New School for Social Reasearch (New York). He is the author of several books and academic articles about racism and populism in Latin America. Among his publications, it highlights "Afroquiteños: Ciudadanía y Racismo" (2002); "Populist Seduction in Latin America" (2000); "El Racismo en Ecuador: Experiencias de los indios de clase media" (2002) (cdelatorre@flacso.org.ec).

Francisco García Pascual

He's Ph. D. in Geography, professor of the University of Lleida and member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Studies of Development and Multiculturality (GIEDEM). Among his scientific production, it can be highlighted "La ganadería en Cataluña. Desarrollo y estructuras del complejo ganadero-industrial" (1998). He is the coordinator of "El mundo rural en la era de la globalización: incertidumbres y potencialidades" (2001), and co-publisher of "Los límites del desarrollo" (1999) and of "Estado, etnicidad y movimientos sociales América Latina" (2003) (garcia.pascual@geosoc.udl.es).

Antoni Jové i Montanyola

He's graduated in Contemporary History by the University of Barcelona and member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Studies of Development and Multiculturality (GIEDEM). In 1987, he wrote his graduation thesis "Estructura Social i conjuntura econòmica a Lleida (1880-1892)", where he analyzed the impact of the economic transformations in the short term and matters related with the impact of the economic changes in the society. From 1991, he is professor of Economic History in the University of Lleida. He is a coauthor of the "Historia de Lleida, El segle XIX" (2004) and author of several articles of research about Economic and Social History. He has been part of different international groups of research, European integrated research actions and consolidated research groups (jove@hahs.udl.es).

Eduardo Kingman Garcés

He's doctor in Social Anthropology for the Rovira Virgili University of Tarragona and professor and researcher of FLACSO, Ecuador. He has worked urban social history and history of the mentalities, as well as about crossbreeding, identities and imaginary subjects related with social history. His most remarkable compilations are "Las ciudades en la Historia" (1989); "Ciudades de los Andes: visión histórica" (1992); and, as coeditor "Antigua modernidad y memoria del presente. Culturas urbanas e identidad" (1999). His last book is "La ciudad y los otros. Higienismo, ornato y policía. Quito 1860 1940" (2006). He is the director of the international magazine "Íconos. Revista de ciencias sociales" edited by FLACSO-Ecuador (ekingman@flacso.org.ec).

Carmen Martínez Novo

She's coordinator of the program of Anthropology of FLACSO-Ecuador. She received her Ph. D. in Anthropology in the New School for Social Research (New York). She has published and investigated about the formation and the meaning of the native identities and, particularly, about the role in their conformation played by external agents like the state, the intellectuals and the NGO. The discrimination and the paternalism have been also referential subjects of her work. She has carried out her research in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Ecuador and, among her publications, besides articles, is remarkable the book "Who defines Indigenous? Identities, Development, Intellectuals and the State in Northern Mexico (2006)". (cmartinezn@flacso.org.ec).

Luciano Martínez Valle

He's doctor in Sociology for the University of Paris III- Sorbonne Nouvelle and coordinator of the program of Public Policies of FLACSO-Ecuador. He is expert in rural development rural and peasant economies. Among his bibliography it highlights his books "De campesinos a proletarios" (1984), "Los campesinos-artesanos en la sierra central: El caso Tungurahua" (1995) "Economía Política de las comunidades indígenas" (2002). Recently, he has published "Jóvenes y mercado de trabajo en el Ecuador" (2006). Nowadays, he investigates about social capital and local development (lmartinez@flacso.org.ec).

Maria José Vilalta i Escobar

She's doctor in Modern History by the University of Barcelona, professor of the University of Lleida and member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Studies of Development and Multiculturality (GIEDEM). She has investigated historical demography and history of the family, as well as social history. Her thesis "Població, Família i treball a la Lleida del segle XVI" (1991) was followed by several articles of research about migratory flows, family structure, and social groups and cities in the Ancient Regime. She is the author of the volume "Història de Lleida. El segle XVI" (2003) and she has participated in a integrated research action between France and Spain about Social History and Literature with four works concerning family and social class in the Catalan narrative of the 19th century. She is currently preparing a research about historical demography by the study of the registries of the parish of Toacazo (Ecuador, from 17th to 19th century) (vilalta@hahs.udl.es).
