EVDIIA, Espacio Virtual de Docencia y de Investigación Iberoamericano (Latin-America Virtual Space of Teaching and Research ). Its promoters, GIEDEM and FLACSO-Ecuador, gathered in the International Seminar that was its origin. Since then they have constructed a solid net of academic relations and research.
FLACSO, la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences) is an international organization of autonomous character that was born in year 1957 on the initiative of the UNESCO and some governments of the region, with the central pretension of promoting the development of the Social Sciences in Latin America. It turned up in a moment of advance in the social importance of researchers in social sciences and economics, the contributions of whom focused on the analysis, with markedly historicist character, of the reason of the economical and social delay of Latin America, looking for the explanatory keys of its underdevelopment and its political future, and proposing imaginative alternatives of improvement. As time went by, other countries were added up until arrived to the fifteen up-to-date members and has spread and diversified its research, to approach other subjects and renewed problems. In any case, during half a century, this institution has consolidated its referential role like a university net of high, interdisciplinary and plural research in social sciences and the economy about the Latin American reality.
The Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences began its presence in Ecuador in 1975, establishing on Quito, and assumed a function of support and improving in the scientific and university studies in this country. Its task has focused on two big areas: teaching (masters, doctorates and postgraduate courses) and the research. In the second area, the Ecuadorian FLACSO counts on a plentiful group of researchers. Their researches are related to disciplines like anthropology, economics, politics and management, gender, urban studies and communication.
GIEDEM, el Grup Interdisciplinari d'Estudis de Desenvolupament i Multiculturalitat (Interdisciplinary Group of Studies of Development and Multiculturality)of the University of Lleida was born in 1997. It comes from an enhancement from the Interdisciplinary Group of Rural Studies of Iberian America (GIERI) who had started up its activities of research at the beginning of the 90's. The GIEDEM is a plural team of social scientists that directs their efforts to promote and spread the research of all those aspects related with the binomial "development- underdevelopment". Formed by historians, geographers, anthropologists and sociologists, it starts from a critical revision of what is usually, described as development and underdevelopment and it asks about the consequences that this practices had over the economy, the society, the politics, the culture and the environment, in different territorial contexts and in several historical moments. The members of the GIEDEM initially focused their studies in the impact that the mentioned processes had in the rural world of Spain, as well as of Latin America and Africa, although, in the last few years, they have broadened their range in what happens in urban areas. Likewise, the GIEDEM, since its beginnings, assumed the divulging of its research results as a strategic purpose by the organization of seminars and debates, or by publications in magazines of prestige as well as the edition and coedition of books. Nowadays, it is a granted Group of Research by the Department de Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació of the Generalitat de Catalunya (DURSI- DIUE: 2005SGR00031) and by the University of Lleida too.
